Tobacco Cessation Reimbursed; Educational Opportunities Offered
The Department of Public Welfare (DPW) has recognized smoking cessation as a Medical Assistance (MA) reimbursable service since January 2007, as outlined in bulletin number: 99-07-02. Because providers must be registered and certified prior to receiving reimbursement for smoking cessation, Magellan has initiated a number of related provider education opportunities so far in 2008.
In January 2008, Bucks County and Magellan held a three-day series of events focused on tobacco cessation, specific to individuals with behavioral health issues. The presenters included Douglas M. Ziedonis, MD, MPH, professor and chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and University of Massachusetts Memorial Medical Center; Allen Masry, MD, an addictions psychiatrist from Westboro State Hospital in Massachusetts; and Greg Seward, MSHCA, a licensed independent alcohol and drug counselor, a licensed social worker, and a Department of Transportation (DOT)-qualified substance abuse professional who holds three certifications in addictions, one of which is a certified master tobacco-treatment specialist.
The first event was for psychiatrists and certified registered nurse practitioners who prescribe psychotropic medications, and included topics such as neurobiological issues and drug interactions. The second event, an Adult Services Community Provider Forum, included an overview of tobacco use and issues specific to treating individuals with behavioral health issues. It also addressed related change within community mental health organizations. During the following two days, a provider training addressed tobacco treatment in mental health and addiction settings for the adult and adolescent populations using a motivational approach.
If you are interested in contracting with Magellan as a fee-for-service tobacco cessation provider, your agency must first register and become certified with the Department of Health. Information about registering is available at: www.dsf.health.state.pa.us/health/cwp/view. Or contact your local Magellan network coordinator for more information.
