“Doctor Shopping” Law in Effect

By law, TennCare members are required to disclose to health care providers if they have received a prescription for a controlled substance within the past 30 days.

The law, which became effective in June 2007, targets those who have their medical service and/or prescriptions paid by TennCare, who “doctor shop” – willingly go to different medical providers to get prescriptions for the same or similar medications. This law makes it a felony for TennCare members to knowingly and willfully deceive a health care provider.

To report suspected fraud or abuse, please contact the Magellan Special Investigations Hotline at 1-800-755-0850 or the TennCare Office of Inspector General at 1-800-433-3982.
