Working Together Toward the Best ADHD Care
Magellan wants to make sure you have the tools and resources you need to provide your patients with the most appropriate treatment services. The guidelines for behavioral health rehabilitative services (BHRS) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) were the focus of a recent study to find out if Magellan’s current best practices are helpful and being used.
The Montgomery County Family Satisfaction Team did a survey to find out from members’ and families’ perspectives. They asked parents and caregivers about the support their children with ADHD received during treatment. At the same time, Magellan did a chart review across many BHRS agencies in Montgomery County.
The survey and chart review found that providers do a good job in:
- Providing education related to treatment options and psychotherapeutic treatment in the home and school
- Providing medications that help improve treatment
- Making caregivers feel they’re an important part of the treatment team.
The survey and chart review found opportunities for improvement in these areas:
- Providing information about local resources, community services and school support
- Retaining and training staff
- Communicating with team members
- Providing aftercare contacts to families at discharge.
Magellan currently is working with its Montgomery County provider workgroup to create a plan on how to change current practices to more fully address our clinical practice guidelines. We hope to expand these ideas to other provider groups in the near future.
