Closely Monitor Patients on Second-Generation Antipsychotics

Our tip sheet and monitoring template can help

The Magellan Southeast Care Management Center is committed to improving practitioner monitoring for potential side effects of second-generation antipsychotics in members taking these medications. As part of our evaluation process, we review treatment records for compliance with the medication monitoring standards endorsed by the American Psychiatric Association, the American Diabetes Association, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, and the North American Association for the Study of Obesity.

Magellan strongly supports the need to monitor these measures. As medical literature has shown1, the monitoring of potential side effects, including metabolic syndrome, is critical in providing quality care to patients.

To promote appropriate monitoring, we have developed a medication monitoring tip sheet and a monitoring template document to assist with medical record documentation. The template includes a table of monitoring measures with the recommended frequency for monitoring each measure.

Magellan appreciates your involvement in our network and your commitment to our members. With your cooperation, we can continue to achieve high standards of quality care and service.
