Magellan Seeks Physicians for Office-Based Opioid Treatment Specialty Network

Opioid use disorders account for numerous issues with morbidity, mortality and antisocial behaviors. With an emphasis on coordinating integrated outpatient care services in treatment of patients with opioid dependence, office-based opioid treatment (OBOT) programs have proven to be effective, confidential, accessible and safe. They result in overall reduced substance use in patients as well as in overall retention in treatment, recovery, and integration in the mainstream.

Like you, the safety and well-being of members are Magellan’s top priorities. Our program’s focus on patient choice is evidence that we are committed to offering your patients an opioid dependence treatment option that truly makes a difference. Magellan continues to support the use of office-based medication-assisted treatment for individuals who are appropriate candidates. As more members seek such treatment, we find the demand exceeds the current availability of physicians who provide office-based opioid treatment. In fact, several large health plans as well as a national employer group incorporated office-based opioid addiction therapy services as part of their benefits beginning in 2011.

As such, we strongly encourage psychiatrists and physicians with addiction medicine specialization—who have not already received the necessary waivers to perform such services—to review Magellan’s OBOT provider resource kit available on this provider website under Providing Care/Clinical Guidelines. Additionally, Magellan’s credentialing criteria for addiction medicine specialists is available for review on our site. You also can visit Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration's website for more details on waiver qualifications.

Robert Ciaverelli, M.D., vice president of medical services at Magellan’s Tristate Care Management Center, serves as a clinical resource and national mentor to providers. He is available to answer your treatment-related questions. You may reach him at 410-953-2043 or RCiaverelli@MagellanHealth.com.

As always, Magellan welcomes the opportunity to collaborate with you in support of positive treatment outcomes for your patients.
