The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) requires that all covered entities as defined by HIPAA must comply with the electronic data interchange standards for health care as established by the Department of Health and Human Services.
The accompanying documents have been prepared as Magellan Health Services specific companion documents to the HIPAA ANSI X12N Implementation Guides. The use of these documents is solely for the purpose of clarification to identify codes and data elements that are required, situational, or that do not apply to Magellan. The information contained in these companion guides do not contradict any requirements in the X12N Implementation Guides.
The Magellan Health Services (Magellan) Companion Guide provides detailed instructions on exchanging ASC X12N transactions with Magellan. Included is information regarding working with Magellan, connectivity, contact information, control segments, Magellan business rules, acknowledgements, and testing.
The intended audience for these documents is the technical area responsible for submitting electronic transactions to Magellan. Additionally, the business rules should be communicated and coordinated with the appropriate trading partner department responsible for the capture or generation of any data required in the HIPAA standard transactions.
